A Real - Time Tra c Generation and QOS Monitoring

The ability to control and monitor network traac is important for understanding the behavior of, and developing control algorithms for, broadband networks. In this paper, we report on a traac generation and QOS monitoring system we built on a Hewlett-Packard Broadband Series Test System. The traac generator is capable of continuously generating multiplexed ATM cell streams in real-time corresponding to arbitrary traac models and call arrival statistics. In parallel, the QOS monitor is capable of measuring the cell delay and gap distributions of the stream when it returns after traversing a test network. These distributions and derived statistics can be visualized in real-time.
